ARTIST STATEMENT
Life’s psychological, emotional, and political challenges fuel my work. My series-based paintings and animations are thoughtful and introspective, and build on archetypal themes: dislocation, loss, rites of passage, and coming of age.
My work bridges abstraction and representation. The subjects of my varied series incorporate the human figure, forms found in nature, and decaying architectural elements. I use a process of deconstructing and rebuilding subjects, while revealing and concealing forms. Each image emerges from layers of paint that are applied in techniques ranging from thin, dripping washes to thick, impasto strokes. Motion -- an essential force in my work -- results from a dialogue among brush strokes, layers, and explorations.
